Celebrating the 4th Cohort of Event Fund Grantees

We are excited to share a glimpse into the inspiring work and experiences of the fellows in our 4th cohort of the Event Fund, which focused on supporting Black Research Software Engineering communities of practice. This video playlist highlights their projects and personal reflections.

These recordings were captured during an unforgettable week in Dakar, Senegal, where we brought the entire cohort together in person. Our fellows gathering coincided with the Deep Learning Indaba conference, creating an incredible opportunity for the fellows to engage with a broader network of researchers and innovators. None of this would have been possible without the generous support of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, whose funding made the in-person event a reality. This impactful fellowship cohort was made possible thanks to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (Grant G-2023-20907), whose support fuels our aim to facilitate more inclusive spaces that enable greater diversity of perspectives in science and technology.

Here’s what you can expect in the playlist:

Innovative Projects: Fellows showcase their impactful projects, from advancing scientific research to developing open-source tools that benefit global communities.

Reflections on Identity: Fellows share what it means to them to be Black research software engineers, emphasizing the importance of representation, mentorship, and creating pathways for others to follow.

A huge congratulations to our fellows for sparking their RSE communities of practice and I invite you to celebrate and amplify the work of these community leaders.
