Algorithmic Justice League and Code for Science and Society Announce Fiscal Sponsorship to Advance Mission of More Just and Equitable Technology.
The Algorithmic Justice League (AJL), an organization that combines art and advocacy to illuminate the social implications and harms of artificial intelligence (AI), has announced it will be fiscally sponsored by Code for Science and Society (CS&S), a nonprofit committed to promoting technology initiatives that are equitable, open-source, and sustainable to advance global access to information.
Since 2016, AJL has worked to raise public awareness about the impacts of AI, equip advocates with resources to bolster campaigns, build the voice and choice of the most impacted communities, and galvanize researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners to prevent AI harms. AJL recognizes CS&S as an invaluable ally with a wealth of expertise that aligns with AJL’s mission and looks forward to having CS&S’s support as a fiscal sponsor. This partnership is not just a financial shift, it is an intentional collaboration and part of AJL’s continued work of aligning resources to drive change.
“AJL is honored to have CS&S as a partner as we work to raise awareness about AI harms and connect those that have been harmed with organizations throughout the community that can support them,” said Dr. Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. “CS&S’s support will allow AJL to build connections with others in the AI Harms ecosystem to ensure we have avenues for not only stopping AI harms, but also seeking out tailored ways for the excoded to recognize the benefits of these technologies.”
CS&S envisions a future where research, data, and tech initiatives shift power to communities. Its work for this future through programs centered on social infrastructure in research and technology makes it a perfectly aligned partner for AJL.
“CS&S is honored to support the work of Dr. Buolamwini and the AJL team. Their creative approach to AI advocacy and vision for the future are unique, and an ideal complement to the work of our other portfolio.” said Dr. Danielle Robinson, Executive Director of CS&S. Continuing, “I know our community of projects, grantees, board of directors, and staff are excited to see AJL join our Fiscal Sponsorship Program.”
